The links below provide teachers with lessons on democracy. Feel free to adapt them as you see fit to meet your classroom needs. And if you are a student, feel free to suggest these lessons, or other election activities, to your teacher.
These lessons are designed for students in grades 6, 9, and 11, but can be adapted for different grade levels as teachers see fit.
While not designed specifically for Saskatchewan provincial elections, these lessons from Elections Canada and the CBC can augment students' understanding of basic democratic principles
Elections Canada's "Choosing our Mascot" lesson plan introduces younger students to election basics by having them decide on a class mascot.
In these lessons students elect a representative who will act on their behalf to solve a problem in the school or classroom. Alternatively, students campaign for an activity in which they believe the class should participate.
Elections Canada has prepared a complete guide to running student elections in accordance with basic democratic principles of fairness and impartiality. They also provide downloadable sample ballots, Voters' Lists, and forms for the official statement of results.
These activities rely heavily on access to the CBC website, but could be adapted for classrooms which do not have internet access.
