Voter registration and revision complete

REGINA, March 26, 2016 – As of 7 p.m. Wednesday night, voter registration and revision to the preliminary list of voters formally closed for the April 4 election.

Elections Saskatchewan has been registering voters, and revising voter information, in a register of voters database since spring 2015. As of today, 750,893 voter registrations have been processed and are on the revised voters list.

“In the 2011 election, at the close of registration, we had 76 per cent of eligible voters registered,” says Dr. Michael Boda, Chief Electoral Officer of Saskatchewan. “As of right now, our coverage rate is 92 per cent of the estimated 815,000 eligible voters. That’s an increase of over 150,000 more voters registered for this election compared to the 2011 election.”

“This is a significant improvement in the quality of the list, and is a result of several busy months of promoting registration, having voters register, and updating voters’ identity and address information.”

More than 11,000 eligible voters checked the status of their registration on the Elections Saskatchewan website since the writ was issued March 8. Also, 9,214 updated Voter Information Cards (VIC) will be emailed this week and next week to voters who requested an update to their voter registration and provided an email address.

This revised voters list will be printed and delivered to returning offices before advance polls open on Tuesday, March 29. Election officials working at the 173 advance voting locations will use this list. Once a voter casts a ballot during advance voting, they are crossed off the list and recorded in Elections Saskatchewan’s poll books to ensure they do not vote a second time on April 4.

“Any eligible voter who is not registered can still register in person at their assigned voting location when they go to vote, either at advance voting or on election day,” says Dr. Boda.

To find your voting location, check your VIC or go to:  www.elections.sk.ca/wheretovote and enter your address.
