Registered Political Parties
A political party may make an application for registration under the Election Act at any time between the day fixed for the return to a writ of general election and the fifth day after the issuance of a writ of election. Each application, in prescribed form, must be accompanied by a complete and accurate petition for registration. Each petition must be executed by not fewer than 2,500 eligible provincial voters, 1,000 of whom must reside in at least 10 provincial constituencies, with a minimum of 100 voters in each of those respective constituencies. Concurrent with its application and petition, a political party must file a written statement declaring its primary purpose is the fielding of candidates for election as Members of the Legislative Assembly. A political party registration application must also include an audited financial statement and disclose prescribed information in respect of its leader, senior officers, chief official agent and auditor.
Once registered under the Election Act, a political party is entitled to incur expenses, solicit and receive contributions, participate in the Province's political contributions tax credit regime, and to field candidates for election to the Legislative Assembly. Registered political parties in an election/by-election year are also entitled, where eligible, to receive reimbursement of a portion of lawfully incurred election expenses.
As of September 23, 2011, there were 6 registered political parties in the Province — their names and abbreviations, as recorded on the Register of Political Parties, are set out below.
